We are the experts and can help you choose the type of battery that best suits your boating needs. Batteries on your boat perform two basic kinds of jobs. They start your engine and run the electrical – lights, electronics and accessories. To choose a battery, first, determine the battery’s application.
Starting Batteries, as to be expected, crank the starter of your boat’s engine. They deliver anywhere between 75 and 400 amperes for the first few seconds and then are recharged quickly by the engine’s alternator. Just like a car battery, they conduct electricity with alternating layers of negative and positive plates.
Starting batteries have lead-calcium plates that are thin and numerous, providing an extra surface area to generate high amperage bursts of current, giving the battery more power. However, there are two disadvantages with this type of battery. Because the plates are thin, they are fragile in high-impact environments such as speed boats. In addition, starting batteries do not tolerate deep discharges, which reduce their lifespan.
On the other hand, Deep Cycle batteries power the electrical components on your boat like the lights, radar, engine alternator and other electrical parts.Compared to starting batteries, which discharge high bursts of energy for short periods, deep cycle batteries are designed to discharge slowly over longer periods their design features thicker plates with a high content of antimony. When the batteries are recharged, energy is re-deposited back into the batter, and the process starts over.
There are batteries that do double-duty for a boat’s electrical components and the engine starting. Dual-purpose batteries usually last longer and give more reliable service than a starting battery, although they are more expensive than other types of batteries.
We carry all the major brands including Trojan and OPTIMA Blue Top batteries. Whether you need a starting or deep cycle battery, Island Batteries has the battery type you need.
